Hi. Just wondering if I arrive in Bangkok how easy it will be to get an overnight bus to Chiang Kong, to then travel into Laos and get the 2 day boat down to Luang Prabang. Will be doing so by myself too.
Cheers!

Pretty easy!
Get yourself to the Mochit terminal, buses depart at 7pm. Tickets are around 630 baht, very comfy bus (toilet on board + steward + drinks served + price of tickets include chicken noodle soup when they stop).
You should get there by 7am. When you stop in Chiang Khong, get a tuktuk to take you to the riverbank opposite Huay Xai (30 - 40 baht?).. they will try to get you to buy your visa and boat ticket in Chiang Khong, quoting you all sorts of figures on how much you'll save.. but just cross the river yourself and get the boat from there.
It's pretty straightforward.
Just beware the horrific traffic jam on the way to Mochit to catch the 7pm bus — leave at like 5pm or something (better, take the BTS to Mochit then cab it from there).

If you think to enjoy the boat trip.... Forget it. Better option is Nok Air from BKK to Udon Thani. Minibus to Nong Kay, cross border into Laos and to Vientiane. All on day one. Day two by luxury bus to Vang Vien is only 3 hours. And on day 3 the 5 hours minibus trip to LPB. Total costs about Bt 1500 for the flight, + 100 for minibus and about $ 15 for whole trip to LPB.
If you like to find out what the comfort of a slow boat is, take the 2 hours trip from LPB to Pak Ou and you will agree with me once and forever!
