Refer to the Mekong River Commission website http://www.mrcmekong.org
There is no flooding in the vicinity of Pakse or the 4000 islands region of southern Laos. Flooding earlier this year worked its way down the Mekong and there was some high water around the 4000 islands in late September - read here http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=2109613
but that flooding has since worked its way down into southern Cambodia.
This is quite seperate to the horrific flooding that has affected north and central Thailand the past few weeks. Laos currently has no flooding problems so your travel plan should be A-OK.

At present the flow of the Mekong through Si Phan Don is below flood level and decreasing (source: http://www.mrcmekong.org/). There shouldn't be any flood related problems to worry about.

Does anyone know how easy it is travel to vicinity of Pakse or the 4000 islands region of southern Laos from Bangkok? We arrive in Bangkok on the 29th and ewere hoping to head north before heading to Laos but dont think that is possible anymore.

Hopefully heading to Pakse from Bangkok in a few weeks. Booked to fly AirAsia to Ubon Ratchathani then plan to get the bus across the border. You can also fly straight from Bangkok to Pakse with Laos Airlines but expensive compared to UR option. If anyone has tips on border crossing from UR to Pakse they'd be much appreciated.

Have the islands in Don Khon/Don Khet area been badly affected by the floods in the region? Has it made travel from Pakse difficult?
