Hi, I am planning my first Laos trip that starts in 1 week. I`ll start from Luang Prabang and then go up north. At one point I need to get from Luang Namtha to Chiang Mai. I found out that there is a bus going from Luang Namtha to Huay Xai. And from there will be a bus to Chiang Mai. Does anyone know if this is doable in 1 day only? I don`t mind taking the bus for almost a whole day. But I just want to make sure if that is possible or not.
Is anyone there right now? How cold will the nights be in the middle of January?
Thanks for your help!

Yes, you can do it. Get the first bus out of Luang Nam Tha and that will get you to Huay Xai with plenty of time to get a bus onwards to Chiang Mai.
Yes it will be cold in the evening there -- I managed with a long sleeved shirt, but I shivered a lot.

Thanks a lot! That`s good news
Since you seem to know I have another question. I hope it`s fine to post it in the same thread. I need to get from Muang Nghoi to Luang Namtha on one day. Is it correct that I take the slowboat from Muang Nghoi to Nong Kiaw (sorry for the spelling, it`s the german way of spelling) and then take the bus to Oudomaxai. There I change the bus and take the one to Luang Namtha. Right? Do you know how long that will take us? Thanks a lot!

Yes that's the correct routing. It will take most of the day depending on what connection you get in Udomxai. You could ask around in Nong Kiaow and perhaps you'll find a through bus, but you'd have to be lucky. I'm not sure on the trip times as I did it by motorbike.
Pretty trip and watch your stuff in Muang Ngoi - theft from bungalows remains a problem there.
