We are planning a Car trip from Khon Kaen to Chiang Rai via Laos with overnight stops in Vientiane and Luang Prabang. The trip will be made by our own car (Thai license).
Does anyone have experience with traveling through Laos by car and are there any things we have to take care of ?

We drive on the correct side of the road, not like in Thailand. The roads are terrible; I hope you have a pick up.

Well because i'm from the Netherlands I am used to drive on the 'correct' side of the road
Are the roads in Laos so terrible everywhere ? Even between Vientiane and Luang Prabang ?
We have a Toyota Hilux 2wd so a little bumpy road should not be a problem.
I am specially interested in the route/roads from Luang Prabang to Thailand/Chiang Rai. And I suppose there is a ferry that can bring us (incl car) across the Mehkong River at the border ?

Pretty much. Vientaine to Vang Vieng is appalling at the moment. There was a 4WD Vigo that had a broken axle a few weeks back. I refuse to drive this route now.
