Has anyone recently gone from Don Det to Bangkok? What does the journey entail and roughly how much did it cost? Is anyone on the island offering shuttle buses?

of course there will be-as soon as 2 dumbfounded travellers who think they cannot fetch for their own in the normal bus arrive-there will be special shuttles. No need to ask or worry about that.
The route goes-obviously-as detailed in any guidebook-via Pakse. You have the choice of 4 direct buses/day to Ubol and then nightbus or train or local laos bus/pickup to border and nightbus from Chong mek=Thai side. If you really have to worry about cost of travel in these regions-you better stay home alltogether. the whole trip less as 1000 THB.
