So I may be in louang prabang or Vientiane (or somewhere else in laos, my plans are so flexible!) for Christmas this year, even though they don't celebrate Christmas so it is not a holiday will it be busy with travelers around this time? I know places like the islands and beaches in Thailand need to be booked because they fill right up but is it the same for Laos? And if so, how far in advance will need to book? I usually don't like to book in advance as I have a lot of time around south east Asia so I am flexible with dates and places. Thanks.

Hey Tom,
Christmas shouldn't be a problem, since, as you noted, it isn't a local holiday and most folks will be working. There may be an uptick of travellers around then, but not enough to change your chances of finding a room or a seat on a bus.
New Years is a different story, however, since lots of locals have that time off. You may wish to book ahead for a few days before or after New Years, and particularly sort out your transportation if you'll be travelling during that time. I hope that helps. Cheers.

It depends where you want to stay. If you wish to stay somewhere special, then I would book. If you don't mind hunting around then don't bother booking. Christmas is busier here and is increasingly celebrated.

local people wont stay in the places low-budget farang stay. And they hardly travel at all. The BIG NwYr in Laos-just like in TH, is songkran around 14/4.
The point is: most of you seem unable to understand that this www does NOT work for all those low-budget places. They simply are not on it. So IF you aim for those bekpekplaces-come and see and check it. If youre too panick about that or want better-from midclass up and overpriced accomm-then book.
