We are planning a 3 month trip in Thailand, Laos & Cambodia this winter with two children (then: 7 and 5). For practical reasons we are thinking of hiring a car. Last year we did this in Thailand for a couple of days - driving ourselves - so we know what to expect there.
But who can advise us on doing this in Laos? (i'm posting the same question on the Cambodia-forum)
Any tips on reliable rental company's?
Better chosing a car with driver or is driving ourselves easy enough? (I'm thinking about roadsigns and safety)
Thx!
Wouter

Europcar is a relaible company. The drivers here are crazy, worse than in Thailand, though. Also I would not drive from Vientiane to Luang Prabang as the road is very windy.

Hey wouter, even though I'm from Belgium as well and we speak the same language I've gotta keep this forum in English.
I've got a phone number from a driver in Vientiane , problem is he doesn't speak a word of English so you might have problems talking to him on the phone.
If you're still interested, let me know and I'll send you his numbers in PM.
But even in Vientiane it's easy to find a driver to take you around. never been driving myself cause I don't trust it that much.
Talk to the people who work in your hotel or guesthouse and see if they have a driver available but do bargain a lot for the prices... it can get really cheap!

Thanks Rufus and Sven! That makes two in favour of hiring a car with driver. It sounds like it's probably the better option.
Sven, I'll send you a PM right away as I'm interested in the driver you know. My Dutch is better than my English anyway (and far better than my Lao, so I'll have to figure out how I will contact him).
