I will be in Northern Laos for several weeks in July and would like to have some recommendations on what brands/types of shoes are best for 2-3 day trekking? I am thinking about getting hiking sandals (chacos) but I am wondering if a covered shoe wouldn't be better b/c of leeches. Thanks!

Hi,
I'd go with the open sandals as while the weather will be wet and they;ll be leeches about, sandals will be cooler and far more convenient.
Also regarding leeches, they will get into boots as well, in which case you've got to take the boot/sock off then get them off -- a lit cigarette is the best tool for this -- any brand will do!
