I will be i Laos in October, probably for arround 7/9 days. I would like to go to Nong Khiaw/Muang Ngoi and Luang Prabang.
I´ll probably be entering Laos through Huay Xai and leaving from LP.
Do you know if there is any buses from Huay Xai to Nong Khiaw??
If not, what would be better?, to go from Huay Xai to Nong Khiaw, via Luang Nam Tha (spending a night there if I must) or to go from the border to LP and from there go for 2/3 says to Nong Khiaw?
Thanks a lot!!

Unless things have changed I believe your best bet is to take bus to Oudomxai then overnight there and take bus to Nong Khiaw the next day. You could go to Luang Prabang first but are not going to save any time in the big picture since you have to travel back there anyways and baring a long uncomfortable bus or speedboat ride it will take 2 days just to get to LP.
Once you have gone up to Muang Ngoi you will have a feel for the boat trip and might want to consider taking boat trip from Muang Ngoi all the way to Luang Prabang. Supposed to be very scenic although the local bus is an experience itself.
Thanks for the reply!
Probably that would be the best way.

"...although the local bus is an experience itself."
I'll bet it is. But I doubt it's one I would want to have.

Local bus is an interesting experience. Being crammed in the back of a songthaew with at least another dozen individuals and possibly chickens or a cow tied onto the back of the "bus".
Not the most comfortable form of transport but I am very glad I did it.
Obviously you haven't spent as much time in local buses as I have. SongTaew are OK, because you never travel very far with them. But anything over an hour is beginning to suck. Anything four or more, is beginning to suck a lot. Ihave to take the night bus to Bangkok next week, and I dreading it already.

Madmac, I said it was an experience. As in something someone should try not that it is a superior form of transport. I took songthaew local buses 3 times, once from LP to Nong Khiaw and one return, the other from Konglor to Thakek. In those 3 rides I saw times where there was probably 20+ people crammed in, I saw a cow tied on the back, chickens in baskets tied on the side, locals hauling bags of rice or machinery parts or jugs of gas. If someone else wants to hop on you just find a way to squeeze them in. You don't see things like that in the western world and that is why I say it is an experience in itself.
4 hrs is definitely the most I would want to spend on one though since like you say that seems to be the moment things start to really get sore. Want to have a bad experience? Take a 4 hr songthaew local bus while fighting dengue fever... I did that too and wouldn't recommend that kind of local experience...
Try the long bus ride in a crowded bus when it's a hot day and there's no AC and you have the runs...
Song Taew are OK. They're almost always short rides.
