Language requirements for holiday in Luang Prabang?
7th September, 2013
How much need is there to learn a little Lao language for a holiday in Luang Prabang only? How widespread is English-language? Will there still be any people who understand French but not English? I usually learn a little local language but repeatedly find it's not needed.

For a typical traveller visit, no need for English in Luang Prabang - older generation will have some French I'd guess, though not sure on that.

Something like 90% of tourists to LP (and other top tourist spots) never get past "sabaidee" and "kopjai" (hello/thanks) but manage just fine. Most Lao folks working in tourism speak at least some English. French isn't spoken by many people these days, mostly older generation and/or academics. The effort to speak a bit of Lao is always appreciated.
