Does anyone know how to get here from Luang Prabang? is there a flight?

According to Lao Airlines domestic timetable, they have flights twice a week from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang, but no flights from Luang Prabang to Huay Xai. So unfortunately that isn't going to help you.
Your only other options are boat (speedboat or slow boat, latter takes two days), or overland via Luang Nam Tha, which takes at least two days.

would you recommend the speed boat? have read somewhere that its for the "fast and furious"!

It's certainly fast and it's not the safest way to traverse the river. I'd recommend the slow boat over the speedboat.

People are reporting faster times by bus than in the past due to near completion of hard surface banked highway Luang Namtha to Huay Xai. One long day to Luang Namtha from Luang Prabang and then another 3 or 4 hours to Huay Xai the next day.
