    Hi changkt,

    Welcome to Travelfish!

To my knowledge the only border crossing which is open to tourists is the Boten crossing north of Muang Sing in Luang Nam Tha province.

sorry, hit submit too soon. So from Phongsali you'd need to back-track to Udomxai, then west to LNT and Muang SIng to reach the border.

Hi ... so am I right to say there is no direct rout to Mengla in China even though they are not that far apart? I am thinking of doing Muang Sing-Mengla-Phongsali ...

no direct route, unless you are a Lao or China national. one guy from my country tried to cross out of Phongsaly into China by the road leading west from Ban Yo in 2008, was turned back.

#3: think you mean Boten rather than Muang Sing right? AFAIK Muang Sing crossing also not open to third country nationals...

Three years ago the tourism office in Phongsali was wishing for this border as if it was the holy grail. They were dreaming of an undending line of backpackers carabinered together from Dien Bien Phou to Muang Kua and on up to Boten via Phongsali. They hate being a dead end.
