Hi,
We plan to visit Southern Laos (Champasak and Don Khon) from Siam Reap, then return trip back to Cambodia .
Can we easily rent a car (with driver) in Siam reap? As we are four pers, is Is it worth doing it rather than bus?
How long will it take to Don Khon then to Champasak?
How's the road?
Thanks.
XL

Hi xtrinh,
Welcome to Travelfish!
Well hiring a car is always better than a bus (if it is in your budget) as you can stop when you want, take side trips etc. You'll have no problems getting a car from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, but you may need to look around longer to find someone to take you all the way to Stung Treng... perhaps as you're coming back to Cambodia you'll be able to get the driver to wait for you in Cambodia so he knows he has a return fare...
Don Khon to Champassak takes most of a day by boat or a few hours by bus/taxi.
Roads are all fine -- you'll have a few unsealed stretches between Phnom Penh and the border, but that is all.

Thaks for your info.
How long would it take in car from Siam reap to Stung Treng?
Any recomendation of things to see on the way?
4-5 days SiamReap-Champasak-Siam Reap in car, is it worth it?

Hi xtrinh,
For just 4-5 days I would say it probably isn't worth it. It will take you at least a day each may of pretty much non-stop driving to get from Siem Reap to Stung Treng. If you had more time and could spend say 2-3 days each way, then it's worth considering. Your other option would be to fly from Siem Reap to Pakse, from where Don Dhet etc are just a few hours away. According to the Lao Airlines schedule, they fly that route.

You convinced me, but I am more confused.
Can you recommend me a trip route ?
We will be 4 days in Phuket to relax but didn't want to go to Northern Thailand, neither spend more than 1-2 days in Bangkok, maybe Ayuttahya by boat was an option.
We prefer to go to Cambodia visit Angkor site and were thinking of Laos but seems too complicated and too many flights.
Is it worth visiting Phnom Penh? If you think so, shall we fly to Siam reap from there or is the way nice to do by car?
In total we have 2 weeks in the aera and want to do too many things.. Can you help?
Thanks again for your precious information.
