Weather In Laos/Travel companions

Posted by montyclaire on 24/5/2006 at 06:01

Hello
I will be flying into Vientaine on 10 July 06. I am planning an extended holiday/working trip through Laos.
As I will be flying in at the start of the rainy season, I was wondering whether I am going to find it hard travelling around to the different Provinces. I was considering staying about a week in Vientaine and then heading to Vang Vieng on the way to Luang Prabang. Will I have trouble travelling with the rainfall? Also, as I will be going solo, I was wondering how easy it is to meet up with other travellers? I guess I'm having that pre-trip paranoia!!! My plan is to stay in laos until january and also spend some time in cambodia, thailand and burma. I'm not sure whether I should boycot Laos in the rainy period and head to another country to return in around October? Any ideas/tips??

Hi montyclaire,

Welcome to Travelfish!

First - you'll have no trouble meeting others -- even in wet season there's no shortage of travellers in Laos.

Wet season has two main results in Laos, less dust and more landslides. Generally speaking the landslides just slow things down a bit -- don't be surprised if your trips take a little longer than planned, but I'd say less dust more than compensates for the delays... of course you get mud instead of dust, but it's far easier to breath in dust than mud.

Rainy season is characterised by a bit of rain, most days witht eh occasional rain all day. Don't expect it to be raining 24/7 throughout the season -- pack a raincoat and umbrella and you'll be fine.

Hi Somtam,
Thank you so much for your reply. I have only been to Borneo by myself and that was only for two weeks. This time, I don't have any time constraints, have literally packed up my bags in Australia and am on my way to explore! So, yes I'm a wee anxious about going alone and hope to meet some exciting people along the way to spend my days with! So thank you again for your reassuring message.
I'm off to buy a raincoat now! :-)

in order to be more precise, we have 4 weeks to spare. North Thailand is obviously out of the question and maybe Northern Laos too??? How is the weather in Southern Laos & Cambodia at the moment??

Hi PKK,

I just spent 4 nights on Don Det and 3 weeks in Cambodia before that. The weathers fine, peaks low to mid 30's most days and only humid in the big cities (ie Phnom Penh). Sometimes overcast, sometimes clear. It rained a little, mostly when then typhoon was going on in China

Cheers,
Patrick

Hi Montyclaire,

I'm (female) travelling to Laos solo also. I'm arriving aprox. july 16th - going into Luang Prabrang. Maybe we'll cross paths somewhere.

Laos sounds lovely. Enjoy your trip.

Hi Claire,

Just arrived in Luang Prabang today and it is lovely. Wondering how your trip is going and where you ended up. I'll be here until the 23 July when I go to Vientiane. Hope your enjoying your trip. This is a lovely change after busy Bangkok, which I love. The people all seem lovely. I just got here late this afternoon. Have you met people to travel and hang out with?

safe travels

Hey Shirley
How is Luang Prabang? Very wet? I am still in Vientiane, it's absolutely brilliant here and I have met many people. Am heading South tomorrow to reach thousand islands.
The first two days were a wee lonely but from then I haven't looked back. I am sure that you will be fine, just be open.
After Thousand Islands I am heading towards Cambodia to be there by 15 August and then back here for work opportunities at the end of August.
what are your plans?
take care, claire

Posted from within Vietnam.

Hi Claire,

It is the 6th August and my time is getting short and I keep changing my plans, but that is alright.

I am presently iin Chau Doc, Vietnam and it is lovely...not a lot of tourist. I took the boat from Phnom Penh, which I enjoyed. PP is interesting and enjoyable, after adjusting to coming from Laos, which is just soo enjoyable. The temples in Siem Reap where great, 2 full days were enough for me and it was a real adjustment to get use to all the begging and thwe sad conditions after Laos. Vientiane was lovely, but the real jewel of the Mekong is Luang Prabang. It is so delightful that I spent 12 days there. It is absolutely gorgeous and the people lovely. It is very enjoyable, the highlight of my trip.

Thousands Islands are suppose to be beautiful, so I hope you are enjoying them.

Tomorrow I head to Can Tho for a day and 1/2, then to Saigon and Hanoi. I leave Hanoi the 15 for Bangkok.

Enjoy your trip and good luck with work. What type of job are you looking for?

Laos is my favorite place I believe.

Safe travels and enjoy,

shirley
