hey everyboy!
i will be travelling around south east asia throughout july (am working in aceh, indonesia at the moment) and after having visited vientiane & luang prabang a couple of weeks back, i really want to visit the south, or at least part of it.
since i also want to go through cambodia, i was thinking of going from there. from what i've understood i need to get the lao visa from phnom penh, which should take one day, so that's not a problem.
the last thing i was wondering about is - is it easier to go to the southern border crossing from phnom penh or siem reap? since it wouldn't be a problem for me to do siem reap - phnom penh - laos OR phnom penh - siem reap - laos (i will be flying air asia from kl anyway, so both flights are available, and cheap!), i thought i might as well find out which one would take less time.
also, will it be a problem to visit the 4,000 islands since it'll be rainy season?!?
thanks!

Hi bonbongirl,
Welcome to Travelfish!
Definetley through Phnom Penh to the Southern crossing with Laos, so Siem Reap - Phnom Penh - Laos is the way to go.
No probs in Four Thousand Islands during rainy season -- if you're looking for a splurge, look into Salaphae - it is outstanding

ok, perfect. will be booking my flights soon. :)
i have to say, i haven't quite decided what my itinerary in southern laos will be - i won't have a lot of time, around 9 days... i was thinking 4,000 islands, champasak & wat phou and pakse, but i am welcome to suggestions...!!!

i've just realised i'm confused about something...
how long exactly does it take to do the phnom penh - 4,000 islands? i can't quite gather the right information, from what i've understood i probably need to stop off in kratie... is that right?

Hi,
If you leave Phnom Penh early, you can do it in a day, but if you've got the time, both Kompong Cham and Kratie are moderately interesting... If you take a look in our trip planner section, you'll see some estimates for the legs you're considering...
