My wife and I will fly fly from India to Bangkok.
Our ultimate destination is Kunming, Yunnan Province, China.
We had planned to take a train to Chiang Mai and then travel
through northern Laos to Yunnan.
Can anyone recommend the best route and modes of transportation?
Where is the best place to cross into Laos?
Where is the best place to cross into China?
Can we get visas for Laos and China in Bangkok
and how much do they cost.
How many days should it take to travel from Chiang Mai
to Kunming?
Thanks,
Gonga

From Chiangmai , you will need to go to Chiang Khong on the Thai side of the river and then cross over to Huay Xai. From Huay Xai travel on to Luang Nam Tha ( LNT) where you should be able to take a public bus to Kumming. However, pl remember, travelling on public bus in Northern Loas can be an awesome experience for many . Be prepared to be sitting beside someone who will be eating raw garlic or whatever available space filled with all sort of things !My trip by public transport from Luang Prabang to LNT 2 years ago was unforgetable! If time is a constaint and you want the comfort, suggest you fly Chiangmai/Luang Prabang/Vientian/Kumminq by Loas Air using their excursion pass.
