I can either book a tour with flights and hotels or just book the flights and hotels myself and DIY the rest when I get there. I have no Lao language ability.
Would I be better off pre-booking or would I be successful DIY?

Unless you are coming at a peak time when I would suggest pre booking accommodation, I would do it myself.

So then I could book all the "local" tours there, easily?
And perhaps save a few $.?

one tour op has gotten back to me and can do the tour I'd like for the $ I'd like to spend. The only bug is I'd like to make Elephant Park on the 4th day and depart of the 5th day. They only want to book a 4 day tour in their tour order.
If I leave them on the 3rd day, went to EP on the 4th day, how would I fare either self guided or finding a local for the 5th day and cover the National Museum and Central Market?
