We are new to this site. We looked to see if our answer was already posted, but there is a lot to look through.
We have only 2 1/2 weeks and want to go to Laos from mid August to early Sept. We plan to enter through Thailand to Huay Xai and go to Luang Prabang.
Two questions: 1) How's the weather? We know its the rainy season, but how bad is it? Is it worth the trip this time of year?
2) Any thoughts on what kind of boat to take? There are slow boats and fast boats.
thanks for the help. Richard

Hi Richard,
Welcome to Travelfish!
The weather will be wet -- expect a couple of hours of rain most days, but don't expect all day drizzle nor all day torrential downpours. The weather will be cooler and often overcast. The main issue with travelling in Laos in wet season are road conditions as if it is a really wet wet season, landslides and so on can cut roadsin places -- not much you can do about it -- it just slows everything down a bit!
With the boats, I'd strongly recommend a slow boat over the fast boat. Both for comfort and safety. The fastboats continue to have accidents, and they don't make you wear a lifejacket and helmet for nothing! The slow boats can get crowded, but August is hardly peak season so it shouldn't be too bad.
Hope that helps!

Dear friends,
I really agree with somtam2000. Actually I arrange the trip from Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang over than 4 years. I recommend you do a slow boat. If you need more details, please do not hesitate to tell me at deleted
