A warning to other travellers: Our trusty Footprint guide told us it was possible to visit Wat Phou in a day trip from Pakse. We did manage it but getting back was tricky and I really do not advise it! We took the 9.00 a.m. songthaew from Pakse and a tuktuk from Champassak. No problem. However, re getting back we were told in Champassak that the thing to do was to get out to the village at Km 30 (the T junction) and there would be buses along the main road. There weren't. They only go through in the morning. We ended up hiring a songthaew all to ourselves (2 people) at considerable expense (by Lao standards: 140,000 kip) to get back to Pakse.
Wat Phou really is worth a visit but it's much easier to stay in Champassak.
