    Hi,

I live in Chiang Mai, and I'd like to take a road trip to Vientiane. Is it possible to cross the border in a rental car, or would I have to leave the car on the Thai side?

    Thanks for any advice!

We had some people who wanted to come to Vientiane over the Friendship Bridge in their rented car a couple of months ago and who asked the same question.

Answer then, and I assume now, is that since it is a rented car and you will not have ownership documents, you will need to leave the car on the Thai side before crossing the bridge.

Good news is that there are places near the bridge where you can safely leave the car. Our friends had no problem.

    Good luck!
