I am going to Laos at the end of january and intend to follow the suggested itinery for Northern laos that is on this website. It finishes at huay xai (or Luang Prabang) but I then want to go across to Vietnam and follow the top to tail itinery starting from hanoi. Is it possible to get there without flying. I have time but budget is quite tight. I know similar questions have been asked on this forum about going from Luang Prabang to hue.
Also any ideas roughly how long it would take, how much it would cost?
Well if you're heading to Vietnam after Laos it would make sense to commence the Laos portion at Huay Xai and finish at Luang Prabang. From LP you can either fly direct to Hanoi or go overland -- there's a couple of different overland routes -- but you're looking at a day and a half to two days travel to do it overland. See the Visa and border crossing FAQ for detailed info on the individual crossings.
