I plan to enter in northern laos and make my way south over prehaps a month. any help u can give would be great.

Hi newboy,
Welcome to Travelfish.
We've not heard anything about this border crossing being closed. As far as we are aware it remains open for business as usual.
Scams used to be a bigger problem than they are now -- mainly related to boatman mafia -- you're best to try to cross with a few others to keep your costs for the boat down a little. Also don't be suprised when the customs officers ask you for a buck or two...
A month is a good period of time for a trip like that.
Have fun!
