Does anyone know the best way to get from Muang Khua to Luang Prabang? From the maps I've looked at there doesn't seem to be a direct route;
if this is the case, any information on bus or boat combinations to get there would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

bus: Muang Khua - Udomxai - Luang Prabang (3h, ~5h)
boat: Muang Khua - Nong Khiaw - Luang Prabang (1 day, 1 day)
(or bus/songthaew from Nong Khiaw to Luang Prabang, ~3h)
'best' way is subjective. some people want speed, others prefer scenery.

Cat's answer is spot on but it also depends on your budget and time availability. There are very few boats from Muang Khua to Nong Khiaw. You might have to wait a couple of days or charter the whole boat.

Going the other direction by boat, are there more boats heading north up to Muang Khua ? Could you possibly start in Luang Prabang and go all the way by boat up to Muang Khua in a single boat ride?

not too sure what you mean by 'more'. it's all based on demand. boats leave when they are paid the equivalent of ~10 (for slowboats) or ~6 (for speedboats) passengers' worth of fares, regardless of actual no. of passengers.

by speedboat = used to be possible. not sure about now.
in 2008 speedboat fares were still displayed for LPB > MK (200,000K/person), but as of Sept 2009 the info had been removed. could try your luck asking at the speedboat landing.
by slowboat = unlikely, boats don't travel on the Nam Ou after dark.
