    Hey

I was wondering if the weather in Laos in okay for travelling in october? i think i read in Lonely Planet that November would be a better time to go and that Cambodia would be okay in October, however, i looks like i'm coming from China so would be cheaper to cross by land in Laos then into Cambodia!

    Thanks again
    Chris

p.s i cant wait untill i've actually been so i can try give advice rather than just taking it!

was in Laos for ~10 days in mid-Oct 2008, light rain in Luang Prabang on one night, heavier showers on one night & two afternoons in Vientiane. worst of the rainy season (& floods) that year hit in Aug & Sept. if you're sticking to the main tourist trail, rainy season landslides on those paved highways get cleared rather promptly. if you plan to head to places like Phongsaly, might be a different story...

if you can, plan to be in Luang Prabang around 4th & 5th October 2009 (actual dates depend on full moon) for Boun Ok Phansa celebrations - temples will be decorated with lanterns that are lit up at night, & neighbourhoods will construct floats for the night parade from Nam Phou to Wat Xieng Thong, where they will be judged for some competition before they're all launched into the Mekong river. people will also make & float krathongs on the Mekong, just like Loy Krathong celebrations in Thailand, but a month earlier. there will also be a temple fair in Wat Visoun. the most magical time of the year to be in Luang Prabang - i timed my 2008 visit just for this :)
