You can't do it by train as there's no train line. You buy a through bus ticket from Vientiane to Hanoi (crosses via the Laksao crossing) but there's been more than a few issues of people being ripped off and pressured to pay more money once they cross into Vietnam. You avoid that probablem by doing it piecemeal in which case you're looking at at least two days. Though, if you're not planning on breaking up the trip stopping along the way, then I'd suggest looking into flying that leg -- prices are quite reasonable and both Lao Airlines and Vietnam airlines fly it.

thanks would like to go by bus where do you suggest to break the journey and would it be better to get the Vietnam visa at the crossing or Vientiane. There are three of us traveling and we would like to backpack as much as possiable time not being a factor hoping to travel thru thailand to laos then vietnam via hanoi.Traveling by train to Saigon with stops along the way then to Cambodia via the mekong then back to Bangkok. So i guess this will be one of the many questions we will be asking thanks
You can't get the Vietnamese visa at the border, you'll need to get it inadvance.
Tha Khaek is nice - stuff to do around there.
Perhaps take a look at the trip planner section -- there's some suggestions in there that may assist along with estimated trip times for individual legs etc
