I'm gonna be in this area in November, and I'm just wondering about the easiest way to get from Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City to Luang Prabang. I looked at the Lao Airlines sight a few weeks ago, and direct flights were listed, but I looked tonight and there were no flights to anywhere in Laos from Saigon/HCM. Apparently Hanoi is shut down for an APEC conference when we arrive in Vietnam, so we can't go through there.
We're only going to have a few days to spend in the area, and would prefer a direct flight into Luang Prabang than a transfer or bus from Vientiane.
I've heard the bus from Vientiane takes about 11 hours, is that worth it when we have such a limited time?

Hi Halu, there seem to be direct flights from Hanoi to Luang Prabang in november on wednesdays and sundays. This is new to me. Lao Airlines QV323 & QV327. Pls try to book these, otherwise you'll have to fly via Siem Reap or Bangkok or Vientiane. APEC will create a big mess in Hanoi, but if you fly SGNHANLPQ you should be fine. Good luck with it.

Sorry, just making sure I understand:
There ARE flights to Vientiane from Saigon? And to Luang Prabang from Hanoi?
Also, thanks for your reply!

Hi Halu,
If I'm not mistaken, from Oct292006 there will be a new direct flight from LPQ-HAN-LPQ. I happen to know this unfortunately, as I'm going there in the first of october. But then, LPQ-VTE-HAN sounds just ok, and better than the bus I think.
In november would not be any problem with the new schedule.
anyway, you might want to check www.amadeus.net
It is NOT a booking site but it gives full details of the possibilites of flight from one point to another.

Thanks! I'll check out that sight.
I'm disappointed that we can't get a flight from Saigon. Maybe a route will open up by November.

I just reread this, and rechecked the lao airlines website and I'm a bit confused.
I was under the impression that there was a flight from Saigon to Vientiane, but the website says only Hanoi - Vientiane or Luang Prabang. Which is it?

For a better sight, you can also check www.amadeus.net
It lists all the flight from one point to another with all the possible airlines.
If your desired direct route is not available, then it will also show the connection(s) along with the airlines company.
Note also that it's NOT a booking site.

Hi halu,
May seem a daft question but which Lao Air website are you looking at? I only discovered, through Travelfish, that there appears to be two sites although one of them is a Paris based website, they don't seem to have the same details for some reason but I'd be more inclined to go with the Laos site.
Laos site: http://www.laoairlines.com/
Paris site: http://www.laos-airlines.com/index.asp

The Paris-based one is a travel agent -- the Laos site is the real deal. Use the Lao one, not the paris one.

Gooday,we are crossing into Northern Laos from Vietnam,to Sam Neau and then Luang Prabang. How tough is this trip,or is it opening up enough for a couple of oldies to do without to much hassle?

There are now flights from Hanoi to LP with Vietnam Air, we know because we've just booked and they are running a 45% discount for November. That means 103 US per ticket plus 14 tax (which now seems to be charged when booking rather than at the airport - although we expect there to be some confusion on this!)
