Hello
I'm interested in doing the Gibbon Experience but don't have too much time to take 2 days getting from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang....is there any quicker way? I've tried looking for flights but I'm not having much luck.
Thanks

When you're done with Monkey Ex, go out to the main road and have someone flag down the Huay Xai / Vientiane bus as it goes by, a short while later (12 hrs or so)there you are in Luang Prabang.

Only flight Huay Xai - Vientiane three times a week. No flight to LP.

From memory Lao Airlined fly from Vientiane to Huay Xai , but not the other way (the plane does a three stop loop - Vientiane - Huay Xai - Luang Prabang ) but it doesn't fly every day. Check their schedule for details.

NewbieC if a long busride is seriously off-putting you might not like Laos travel very much =) If you have time, maybe overnight (or two) in Luang Namtha then get the morning bus to Luang Prabang (about 8 hours) or just to Udomxai and do a sidetrip to Nong Kiew then get a boat down the Nam Ou to Luang Prabang. Several alternatives to just one really long busride.

Thanks again - Captain Bob your picture is really freaking me out!!
I think we might to try break up the bus journey (btw we're only doing North Laos because of my dislike for long bus trips.......)

Hi all,
spend NEw Years eve in Huay Xai.
I'm not seeing Huay Xai as a destination on the Lao Air website ...
this is crucial as we're already signed up to do a jungle trek. and I don't want to: A) do the 15 hr bus trip from Luang and
any news on this? anyone?

Hi!
According to Wikitravel, the flights were stopped in November 2010. See the flight section here:

Sorry my mistake. I thought you wanted to do Luang prabang to Huay Xai .
Laos Air has a flight from Vientiane to Houeisay. I am guessing that Houeisay and Huay Xai are one and the same.

Right, took me a while to find the Laos domestic page, where i see two AM flights from Vientiane > Houeisai. Flights from Luang Prabang to Vientiane are later in the day so it looks like a two day process. Thanks Goonistik!

Hanoi-Luangprabang flights daily on Laoairlines, then get a speedboat up to Huay Xai takes 7 hours including a lunch stop at Pakbeng.
