We are trying to pick a few guesthouses to choose from while in Luang Prabang. However, I would like some suggestions on what area to stay in: i..e center of town, on the Nam Khan? How would you describe the different areas of town and which is most "quaint" yet conveniently located to walk around on food?

I stayed in the sawadee guest house in the south of town, last april.
$15 a night for a twin air con room with breakfast.
it was a 10-15 minute stroll into the centre of town.Luang prabang is very small considering it is laos second city, nowhere is more than 15 mins from the centre,so anywhere in the town would be ok.Some of the accomadation along the river is quite some way out,so the town is definatly the best option.
Enjoy your trip, especially those ice cold bottles of beer lao.
There is a well-written article in the Travelfish Features section on finding a good guesthouse in Luang Prabang. It outlines the different areas in town where you might stay and the pros and cons of each area. It also gives very specific recommendations on places to stay. Give it a look. Between that feature and the traveller's feedback on the accomodation listings, you'll have no problem identifying several great places to stay. Cheers.

We leave 27th of oct to Laos.
What can we bring for local people? soap, balpoints, t-shirts...?? Please give some ideas.
How is the temperature/weather now in Laos an Cambodja?

Thanks for the recommendation. Good to know LP isn't so big. Sounds like in or around town is the most convenient place to stay. Cheers.
