Does anybody know what time you get back to Huay Xai after the Classic Gibbon Experience? Can you catch a bus the same day to Luang Prabang? Or is it easier/quicker/cheaper to get the bus to Luang Nam Tha and go from there to Luang Prabang?

Around 3pm. No bus to LP that late, so better to go to Luang Nam Tha and get a bus from there the following morning.

In late Dec 2009 a colleague took an overnight Huay Xai -LPB bus that had AC, but he can't recall much details (what time it left Huay Xai, etc), so no idea whether this service is daily, or a special service just for peak tourist season. Would expect the GibbonX office in Huay Xai to have more up-to-date info, have you tried asking them?

There's a 5PM VIP bus to LP. Book a few days in advance as it may be fully bookedotherwise.

We went from the Gibbon Experience to Pak Mong (about 3 hours north of LP) direct in Dec last year. We got to the village Ban Don Chai after finishing the Gibbon Experience at around 12:30. At around 13:00 a long distance bus came past which took us all the way to Pak Mong. The same bus travels on to LP and Vientiene, so it is possible for you to travel directly, though you would get there very late at night (we got to Pak Chong at about 22:00). If you miss this bus there are others (so we were told) going to Luang Nam Tha where you can either stay overnight and travel to LP the next day, or catch a connection to Oudomxay and stay there overnight, before travelling on the LP. The main thing is to tell everyone your plans, to increase your chances of getting on a long distance bus. The people at the GE office in Huay Xai couldn't tell us anything about onward travel.
