Hi
Im planning on getting the night bus from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, then onto Laos, I need to get to Huay Xai. Which border crossing do I go through and how much is a visa there?? is it best to get it ahead of time or is it ok to get it at the border?? i already have a supply of photos

Hi Shanna,
To get from Chiang Mai to the Chiang Khong/Huay Xai border takes approx 5/6 hours (we did it by taxi, not sure if same by bus) and bear in mind that the border closes at 6pm so you'll need to decide what time you want to get there and which side of the border (river) you want to stay.
Its ok to get your visa at the border. We stayed at a guest house on the thai side (chiang khong) and they arranged our visa's for us (although we think we paid a couple of £ extra for the privalege).
Visa on arrival is US$30. You can pay in USD or Baht, but you're better off paying in dollars as the Baht exchange rate you'll be offered by immigration will be pretty poor.
