DIRECT
fly VTE to Huay Xai by Lao Airlines (best way)
or direct VTE-Huay Xai bus taking 24+++hours
INDIRECT (within Laos)
bus journey duration:
VTE - 3.5+h - Vang Vieng - 7.5+h - Luang Prabang - 5h - Oudomxay - 4h - Luang Namtha - 3.5+h - Huay Xai
(all these towns have buses leaving for the next town every day.)
domestic flights:
http://laoairlines.com/flights/domestic-flight-schedule.html
VTE-Luang Prabang
VTE-Oudomxay
VTE-Luang Namtha
slowboat journey times:
Luang Prabang - 1 day - Pak Beng - 1 day - Huay Xai
speedboat journey times:
Luang Prabang - 3h - Pak Beng - 3h Huay Xai
do your own pick & mix of options...
indirect option through Thailand (via Udon Thani - Phitsanulok - Chiangrai - Chiang Khong) exists too, but you'll have to exit Laos at VTE & enter again at Huay Xai = pay for a Lao visa twice (if your nationality doesn't qualify you for visa exemption).
