Hi mongoose,

Welcome to Travelfish.

As far as I know, regular passenger boats no longer do the Luang Prabang to Vientiane trip. You'd need to sort out placement on one of the occasional freighters doing the trip -- and you'd need to organise that in Luang Prabang.

The segment north (from Luang Prabang to Huay Xai) is far more scenic.

hey,
Are there any other companies who do the luang prabang to huay xai trip? We have found the one listed on your site, but wanted to look at alternatives for a 3 day cruise, any suggestions?
Or has anyone been on a cruise with asian oasis and can give us any advice?
thanks in advance

I don't know that I can give some information or not. But I would like to do, if I can. From the question of Zoe, you can buy the ticket in Luang Prabang for slow boat. It take 2 days. They must be stop at Pak-Bang. You have to overnight there. There are many guest houses run by Lao. The next day the boat will leave about 08.00 a.m. and you will arrive Huy Sai about 17.00 p.m. If you need 3 days cruise, you have to hire private boat and it quite expensive. Thanet

I just did the slow boat down stream Huay Xai to Luang Prabang and it takes two days. Asian Oasis runs the LuangSay Boats and they are much more luxurious (and expensive) than the regular slow boats. All the agents in LP can help book you on the slow boat but going that direction will be upstream and a little longer. Suggest you buy a cushion as the wooden benches are quite hard.
Enjoy
