While walking around town I came across a great initiative called the "The Language Project". The purpose of the project is to create and support libraries in underdeveloped areas. It provides motivated people the resources and tools they need to study and help themselves from books that have been donated. Most of the users utilize the facility to learn English from books that are not available in Laos.

Yes, there is also another private initiative which is very effective especially if you are a responsible traveler going out into the coutryside. Big Brother Mouse makes, designs and prints books in Lao and English, so guests from all over the world can buy, give away or take it homw as a nice souvenir.

The initiative is based in Luang Prabang near the Wat Xieng Mouane.

I think you can even buy some of the books on the night market, it was 10$ for 7 books.
THIS is always better than giving away candies!
