The Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre is a new museum in Luang Prabang dedicated to the ethnic peoples of Laos. This is the only museum of its kind in the country.
The permanent exhibition features 7 different ethnic groups: Akha, Hmong, Khmu, Lanten, Mien Yao, Tai Lue, and Tai Dam. Information and photographs accompany displays of traditional clothing, handicraft tools, and religious artefacts. Text is available in English, French, Lao, Chinese, and Japanese.
This is a great place to learn about the diverse ethnic cultures of Laos, and helps to put what you see in your travels around Laos into context. It is especially important if you're planning on going on a hilltribe trek or village visit and want to be a sensitive and informed traveller.
The Centre's museum shop sells unique handicrafts directly from village producers, and the cafe is very peaceful and has over 50 books you can read on history, culture, and the anthropology of Laos.
Location: The Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre is on the foot of Phousi hill in Luang Prabang town. It's just behind the Dala market and Children's Cultural Centre.
Opening Hours: Tuesday-Sunday 09:00-18:00. Closed Mondays.
Admission: 20,000k per person
