When we went last year we stayed in China Town, in a place called Grocer's Inn. This place is a tourist attraction on its own with great street food and a huge market, and it's a few minutes walk from a train station that will take you anywhere you want to go! We were only in KL for a few days, but in that time visited the Petronas towers (which you have to go to very early to be allowed in to go to the top as they only allow a fixed number of people in per day), the aquarium which is in the shopping mall at the base of the towers and the Malaysian zoo which was fantastic!! I'm sure there are many more famous places to visit but we had a great time with just those, and all were easily accessible from Chinatown.

Batu caves (which are also Hindu shrine) near KL make an interesting half-day trip. You can take a bus or train there. We were there last month and the place was visited by the 'fire yogi' and it was even more exotic..
