Hi! Has anyone done this independently? I am in KK right now, and it seems that the only info I can get is about packages - and they aree wayyyy beyond my price range. Is it possible to hire a boat, stay for the evening and head back? Does anyone have any budget suggestions?
Thanks!!!

I don't know, but I had a look on the web.
I started with (http://www.malaysiasite.nl/turtle.htm) and it appeared from this that there are restrictions on access.
I then saw on a gov't site...
"Pulau Penyu National Park(Turtle Islands National Park)... Visits to the islands can be arranged through a travel agency. Please see tour Operators.
Places to Stay
Accommodation is in chalets on Pulau Selingan. Price RM130-160.
Getting there
Tour companies will arrange for the journey from the wharf at Jln Buli Sim Sim east of Sandakan".

It seems that Crystal Quest run the accommodation and have largely cornered the market for themselves. It appears the big 'thrill' for tourists is to (possibly) see turtle egg laying. One Lonely Planet contributor said another firm (Sepilok Tropical Wildlife Adventure) also do trips.
You've probably seen the Lonely Planet comments, but if not...

Sorry I can't be any more help.
Cheers
