Just and update for what we've experienced. We tried to cross the border into Laos at Lao Bao on the 27th and were not able to get in.
We called on of our friends who lives here who asked a friend in the goverment who could not find a good reason why we should not be able to cross the border. The guy at the border said that for the last month they have sent people back. We tried to find out if money would help the 'problem' which didn't get us any further.
As far as i've heard normally you would be able to cross and just get a sticker for the motorbike.
I'm curious to find out whether people have crossed on a motorbike in to Laos recently , at which border crossing and what paperwork they had.
If anything else this is just meant as information for people wanting to cross there to save them from dissapointment.

Do you own the bike and have full papers for it?

We own them as far as any foreigner can, we have the 'blue card' but not with our names on it.
They didn't even check for the papers at the border, the Vietnamese side told us we first needed to check at the Laotian side, and they told us they would only tell us 'no' once and did not give a good explanation. So the ownership seemed irrelevant.
