Hi we just stayed at One Florence Close in Singapore which was good, clean place with free internet, air con, very friendly and helpful staff, funky furnishings but small rooms. It was next to the MRT (train system) which gets you EVERWHERE in Singapore and makes the whole place very easy to navigate. The "Island" you are looking for is called Sentosa Beach. You can get there via the MRT. I hope this helps.

cheap and grungy (?) sometimes come with one another. but not always. during our trip to singapore we stayed at the YWCA in fort canning, which we booked online at their hotel web site(http://www.ywcafclodge.org.sg). that cut down our hotel cost, so that we found a low-priced yet very nice hotel, clean, accessible, and full amenity. if you're planning to go to sentosa, you might want to look up the following hotel web sites:

We stayed at new 7th storey hotel; good location, next to Bugis Junction (tube) and ten min walk to famous Raffles Hotel. Paid approx 60 S$ per night i think for double with aircon. Bit tatty, but was clean.

the big water park with pools, and slides on Sentosa (aka Fantasy Island) was closed down some 5 years ago. There is now only one other water theme park called Wild Wild Wet which is really small and filled with kids! http://www.wildwildwet.com/
