Crutches in the islands?

  • susette

I have had ACL reconstruction in Bangkok, Thailand. I will be in recovery for 4 weeks, 2 will be couch surfing with ice packs. After I regain my mobility I’d like to go to the islands for a week of hanging on the beach. However, I may still need crutches. I have been to Ko Kradan and Ko Mook in the past and know I will not be able to jump off a long boat. Getting across the sand with crutches will be difficult but possible as I am fit and have a friend to help haul bags. Any suggestions for a quiet beach to hang on, do some recovery, go swimming (it will be April), some snorkeling and with access that will not include jumping off a boat or taking a long hike to the resort. East or West coast is fine and I guess I am a flashpacker this trip. Due to the hobble factor, a private bathroom would be good.

Perhaps Ko Wai in the east -- from memory there is a pier there and nothing is too much of a walk away.

Meant to add -- or Ko Maak (in the same area as Ko Wai ).

I'm in the same boat. Broke my foot 10 days before my trip was to begin. Wound up checking out Ko Samet and loved it so much I couldn't leave. It wasn't exactly handicap friendly (though White Sands Resort was on a flat stretch) but don't underestimate the kindness of the people you will meet. My new friends helped me get up and down stairs, carried my bags, and were endlessly patient. And the Thai people will bend over backwards to make life easier for you. Just smile and be willing to accept the help that's offered. You'll be fine. Good luck!
