Has anyone taken an I-phone to SE Asia?

  • ms1892

I am considering taking my I-phone to SE Asia when I depart next week although it is currently locked to a UK network.

I was hoping to find out if anyone else has succesfully unlocked their I-phone (specifically the latest 3GS model) and if so did it work OK in Thailand, Cambodia or Vietnam?

Is it too much to hope for a 3G network in SE Asia? And perhaps most importantly, did the handset suffer any long term ill effects from being 'cracked'?

I am aware that using my existing sim card from a UK contract whilst abroad would probably be a short cut to bankruptcy so I would be looking at buying local pay as you go sims.

Sorry for the multitude of questions. Im a bit of a newbie to this travelling thing.

    Thanks in advance
    M.

Not having done any of this myself, but...

All the Jailbreaking roads lead to MBK in Bangkok -- if you wanted them to modify your phone so you could remotely fly a 747 with it, they probably could.

The following two posts will probably be quite useful:
Internet access with your iPhone in Thailand
Mobile internet settings for your phone in Asia

Also, don't forget to take a look at our iPhone Apps for there!

Thanks for the link, Somtam2000 :) I finally made it back to BKK and found a DTAC center -- they converted my pay-by-the-minute account to a full month's unlimited data account. They even gave me credit for the minutes I already had. I've been very pleased with the service and the tethering is *very* handy...

I took my iPhone for my 2 month trip, and it was great. I used DTAC in Thailand and M-phone in Laos, and both provided me with data when I wanted it. It was great to be able to check Travefish or the like whenever I wanted to, without bothering to go to an internet cafe.

In terms of the other uses, I obviously used it for my music, used the Google maps app to look where I was when I felt like it, loaded some Lonely Planet PDFs onto it (using the app 'GoodReader') to keep for reference, kept in touch at home with mail and Facebook occasionally, and jotted down any notes on it for references (looking through my notes now, I had one for a reminder to look for 'Nancy Chandler's Map of Chiang Mai).

It was a great tool to have if you like being connected, without having to waste time looking for (not that they are sparse, but you know) and sitting down in an internet cafe.
