hi there,
We will be travelling to Thailand in January and are trying to decide between staying at Koh Tao or Koh Samui. We are not the party type and were thinking about staying at MaeNam Beach in Koh Samui. The thing is, there is no snorkelling from there.
So we are considering taking the day trips to Ang Thong as well as Koh Tao for snorkelling. This seems to cost quite a bit, and we are wondering if we should stay at Koh Tao instead and save one trip. Can we go to Ang Thong on a day trip from Koh Tao? All the info we've read so far points to taking the trip from Koh Samui.
Also, can we snorkel off the beach from Koh Tao or do we still have to take a boat out?
Would we have a problem getting accomodation in Koh Tao since we are not divers?
Would appreciate any advice, thanks in advance!

Ko Samui is the best spot to use as a base for the trip to Ang Thong, but to go to Ko Tao on a snorkelling daytrip is a long way for a dip in the ocean!
Why not divide your time between Samui and Tao? On Ko Tao you can snorkel straight out from some of the bays (Hin Wong is excellent) and you'll have no probs getting accommodation as non-divers.

That's great info, thanks! We only have 3 days to spend on the islands before heading north again, so I wasn't sure about spending more time in transit to Ko Tao versus chilling out in Samui.
Do you know if it is easy to get to places on Ko Samui where we can snorkel off the beach instead? I was reading that there are rocky headlands on one of the coasts (west? south?), but wasn't sure how we can get there and what the snorkelling is like?

hi again,
Does anyone know if we can book a day trip to Ang Thong from guesthouses or stores in Mae Nam? Or do we need to book it from Nathon or Chaweng?
Thanks,
Fionna

You'll be able to book it from any travel agent on the island.
