Although it was my 2006 trip many things don't change. Booked a 1 day tour in Chiang Mai. No idea now who with or whether the advert for it was in our hotel or outside a travel agent. However, minibus pick up from accom. and headed north. I remember the boat ride down the river to where we docked and technically entered Laos. I was dubious as to the authenticity but didn't care as the area was set up with stalls selling mainly alcohol, cigs and clothes at very cheap prices. Duty free nirvana. We visited the town on the border with Burma where for 300B I think, you could walk across the bridge, get your passport stamped, visit probably tourist stalls and return. I declined. We all had lunch at a restaurant here. Overall, I really enjoyed my day out and about. I recommend it.

I noticed them stamping passports with the Lao stamp too, stopped for lunch on the boat out of Xiengkok, I'm not sure the tour would be worth it. I've heard there's a pretty good museum in Chang Mai, maybe good selection of T shirts too. Unless that is you're into gambling, I heard there are a few big casinos up there for Thai to gamble in where it's legal.
Best Feu north of Huay Xai.
