I have a trip to Thailand coming up very soon, and to be honest I've noticed I'm not as psyched for this trip as I have to other places.
So many people I know rave religiously about Thailand (from the package holiday in Phuket types, all the way to the full-fledged independent travellers)...somehow I wonder if Thailand is overrated? Is it really that great?
Somehow I just have low expectations of the place, and the region even.

IMHO yes! Thailand IS overrated its treated by many as the holy grail of exotic locations, and its not really that exotic any more as the world shrinks. However Viet Nam and Cambodia amazed me. Doubtless many others will post how great Thailand is, maybe just go with an open mind?

Great, keep your expectations low and it's unlikely you'll be disappointed.

It's what you make of it. Follow travel books and repetetive forum advice and you may get a fairly predictable experience. Leave things more to chance, allow more time, try things no one's prepared you for and who knows. Anyway don't listen to my advice, think for yourself (I insist!)

I have to ask - why have you planned a trip to Thailand if you don't think it's going to be any good? Seems a bit odd to me. Anyway, you don't say how long you're away for but as Captain_Bob says, leave things to change, allow more time etc. and you are sure to find places which do wow you. And if Thailand isn't working for you, head to a neighbouring country (if you have time). Overall in my opinion Thailand still has plenty to offer visitors.

Thailand is so varied that there has to be something there for you!!
You just have to decide what it is you are looking for.
There are temples, ruins of past cities, beaches, islands and great food; some of it very tourist some of it not!
If you've never been before it will be amazing to you (if it isnt, you've just picked the wrong place!)

Thailand is a great place, and as others here have indicated, very varied. Of course, Thailand is a recently developed country, but it is developed. I consider that a plus, but for those looking for utterly simple and free from modernity - well, that's not Thailand anymore. Laos is more like that. I don't find that attractive or appealing, but some do.

MADMAC put his finger on what I disappointed me about Thailand, its is SO developed and well EASY (in so many ways...) my last big trip was India and when I crossed the border from Thailand to Cambodge I immediately felt more affinity for the dirt and squalor of Cambodia. Up to you...
