Help needed: Bangkok to Ubon

  • lakyw

    Hello,
I've recently arrived to Bangkok and want to take a bus/train tomorrow to Ubon or Chong Mek to cross the border to Laos. Do I need to book a place in advance for a bus or train? What are the chances of just arriving to Morchit or the train station and get a seat in a VIP bus/sleeper train?

    Thank you.

Better book in advance if you're on a specific schedule. Sure, you might be able to score a ticket but it might be 6 or 8hrs later than the one you wanted. The VIP buses usually run full. Last year to get a train from here to Bangkok, I had to book 24 hrs in advance to get the one I wanted.

I just went to the train station a couple years ago. Missed the express train by minutes, caught a regular that ran late, got into Ubon at 7:30 or something. I'd take a look at the schedule online and just go, arriving early. The ride isn't tiring at all and I like to watch stuff go by. Ordinary trains in Thailand aren't bad at all.
