Sawadee kap,
This seems to be working out okay for more mundane, quick answer questions, so here's list no. 3. I'll keep it to 10 questions a list, in the interests of brevity. Please keep in mind I'm in Phuket and have no experience of Thailand outside of this Island.
1. OJ is way expensive here compared to other drinks. I love my 100% real orange juice, but I still want to economise. For about a litre of juice in a carton it costs around 67 baht, but I saw a massive 1.25l can of juice for about 50. Is there any reason not to buy it? It says OJ concentrate on it - is that the same as 100% juice, or are you supposed to dilute it with water. Would it have killed em to put a ring pull on it?
2. I have a terrible feeling I got food poisoning of one of those 10 baht 7/11 sandwiches yesterday. It was the pizza bologna one. Has anyone else experienced that? On my tight budget, I've been pretty much living off those things - well, those and the "smoky bite" hotdogs that come to about 20 with a bun. Man I love those, but I should probably try to eat healthier. Also, is the road food generally safe to eat for a ferrang?
3. I notice a lot of people use creamers instead of real milk in the coffee here. Man do I hate creamers. Like OJ, the real milk seems comparable in price to that which you'd pay in Sydney, what's the story? Should I buy those little poppers/cartons of milk rather than the bottled stuff? It seems to be better value for money?
4. What's up with the French?
5. Anyone shopped at a pharmacy called "Super Cheap" near Bangkok Hospital in Phuket Town? I hear their prices can't be beat. True?
6. Is it just me, or do a lot of Thai people have a real problem comprehending basic logic, math and business skills?
7. Is this not also true of many ex-pats here? About how long does it take for Thailand to make you strange?
8. Has anyone ever successfully managed to explain to a Thai that most foreigners do not find Ladyboy's beautiful and are in fact repulsed by the whole concept of gender modification? I know I've sure run out of breath trying. Live and let live and all that, but jeez... It's enough already with the katooeys.
9. How can I permanently abolish/minimise the amount of time I spend here dealing with diarrhea?
10. Is the Thai hot coffee you get from the carts for a tidy 10-20 baht made from ground coffee beans or is it instant, or something else again I'd never have thought of, like strained monkey spit?
Thanks all!

9. Stop eating those crappy 7-11 sandwiches and hotdogs! (Ugh - how could you?) Go find yourself a street vendor selling Pad Thai for 25bt. You can't go wrong with that.
10. May not be monkey spit, but could be weasel poo. Ok, don't know if they have that in Thailand, but it could be their local animal version.

The old addage "garbage in, garbage out" applies here. stop eating crap. Rice or noodles are ubiquitous & cheap.
Diarrhea; see above & eat some yogurt. bananas may also help.

Had a delicious burger tonight. You'll be pleased to know I ate all the rabbit food on the side that came with it, just to be healthy.
PS The 10 baht tuna sandwich I had today seemed to stay down okay.

2....By road food, if you mean "road kill", then don't eat it. If you mean street vendors, then yes it's usually safe for us.
Nor does planning, being somewhere on time, etc. Mai pen rai has many meanings. Learn it.

Liz, I love ya, but ahhhh - you can definitely go wrong with Pad Thai (or any food cooked in Thailand!) My wife got the shits for a week after eating Pad Thai one time. And those crppy sandwiches and hot dogs at seven taste good! I eat 'em all the time. Southeast Asian Food gets old after a while.
"The old addage "garbage in, garbage out" applies here. stop eating crap. Rice or noodles are ubiquitous & cheap."
Most of the nooples here are loaded with sodium, and don't taste nearly as good as those sandwiches from Seven. The only plus is you're not likely to get sick on them. But your taste buds are going to get fed up with them sooner rather than latter.
"6....Logic does not exist here. Ask any expat married to a Thai.
Man, does Exacto have this right. Don't expect logical thinking here. God love 'em, there are certainly plenty of kind, generous, friendly people here. But rational thought process just isn't one of their strengths.
As for the French, I used to dislike the French, but since I have been in Thailand, I have only met eight people who are French citizens (plus one in Laos). One was a nasty French woman who was repulsive in ever way possible. But another was utterly charming and the six guys were very cool. It's generally bad to paint a whole group with a broad brush.

OK, MM, I'll 'fess up. I travelled through Bali, Flores, Lombok, Vietnam, Cambodia and Malaysia before hitting Bangkok. Over that 4-5 month period, I ate restaurant and street food, and never got sick once. I arrived in Bangkok, checked in to the hotel, then rushed out to get a Pad Thai from a street vendor. I spent that entire night 'chucking my cookies' (as my grandmother used to say!). It was probably the prawns that I had them throw in. It was the only time I got sick on that trip.

I can understand your 'jadedness' with Thai food after living their for so long. But the Thai's have the tastiest food in the SE Asia region! It's all so tasty!
But Cranky is a new arrival. He should be out there enjoying the local food, not playing it 'safe'. Besides, just eating over-processed 7-11 food that has been sitting around for awhile would probably give him the runs back home, too! In my not-so-humble opinion....

thanks for the nod, but i think it was neosho's comment on logic and not mine. my two cents is that the Thai's think WE are the crazy ones, but they find us very entertaining...

exacto....I know out here in the village I make them laugh just by being stupid about things. So, yes it is a two way street. The wife doesn't find it very entertaining when I cut down a food source she has planted somewhere because I think it's a weed.
As for the food, I have to be with Madmac here. I get tired of the rice 24/7. Some times just gotta have some french fries. On my annual trek to the states earlier this year, the first 5 days I couldn't get away from the toilet. I don't know if it was because of some one thing I ate or just not being used to all the processed food.
I've also met some French here that I consider my friends now. I find the French do have a tendency to hang around each other because of the language though.

There tends to be a lot more fat in western diets Exacto, so I think that's what gives you the shits when you suddenly switch back. I'm guessing here, but it's happened to me too. Whereas when I went from German diet to American diet, there was no affect.

I know it all now.
2..."If you mean street vendors, then yes it's usually safe for us."
That's what I was referring to, yes. Good.
4....LOL
I've met 3 and they've all had their quirks. All run hotels, sort of, and they became increasingly odd in the order I met them. I met a VERY eccentric American today, so now my wacky French landlord seems somewhat normal by comparison. It's all relative.
6....Logic does not exist here. Ask any expat married to a Thai.
Yes, I know, but somewhere in the back of my primitive male brain I know I can figure out how it all works. There MUST be some method to their (perceived) madness. At least some consistency you can get to know. They surely understand each other, right? So there must be something concrete to their behaviour and thinking. There must!! I've already started using mai pen rai. Useful.
7....How long have YOU been here.
'bout six weeks
10...Probably instant.
A local ferrang coffee shop owner said he thinks it's a mix of instant, beans and some other stuff. I take advantage of his "bottomless cup" policy now. It actually equates to 70 baht a pot, or up to 12 cups, depending on if other people are drinking from the pot also. He assures me it's a good deal.

@Madmac - as soon as I read your pro-dog post, I immediately started craving a "smoky bite" hotdog from 7/11. Why the smoky? It's the cheapest of all dogs coming in at 12 baht - 20 with bun. If you load up on dressings and sauce and mayo it actually does a good job of filling you up. Well, it tides me over for an hour or so anyway.
Also, I love the way the Thai girls say "smoky bite" when you order it. Cute as hell.
Even though I've kept up my convenience store dining, I seem to producing more, erm, solid material now. Hopefully this means my body has finally adjusted. I think it was mixing in the roadside cart food that was messing me up a bit before. Some of those motorcycle-kitchens may not be too thoroughly checked out by the health inspector, methinks. What do you mean, what health inspector?

No, they mustn't. My wife, who's Thai, thinks all Thais are idiots. She tells me this frequently when I say "Why did he (or she) do (fill in the blank)". "Because Thai people are stupid".

Cranky, when you finally get them figured out, would you let Madmac and I know.
I've also heard the "Because Thai people are stupid" from other Thai's. But I also say that about Americans when I can't really explain something we do. Did your wife honor the dead yesterday? Mine did. The ghosts ate better than I did.
Madmac, why do you keep refering to me as Exacto? It doesn't bother me ,but he may not like some of the things I say.

I don't know Neosho. Because I'm not paying attention, that's why.
And of course, we had to honor the dead. My wife got annoyed when I scoffed that we were wasting time and resources.
Because my wife lived in Germany for 12 years, and because she loves German order - when she returned she developed a deep sense of cycnisism about her own people. It took her over a year to get comfortable living here, and still she bitches about them. She had major culture shock moving here, and it's her culture.

@Neo - "The ghosts ate better than I did." Hahahahahaha!
Hopefully by the time I do, I won't have been deported, bankrupted or turned semi-insane like all the other ex-pats with brain-sunburn roaming about the place.
"Cranky, when you finally get them figured out, would you let Madmac and I know"
Will do
@Mad - My wife got annoyed when I scoffed that we were wasting time and resources.
That kills me. Surely there's some starving beggars out there that get thirsty/hungry enough to go around drinking the strawberry Fanta and misc snacks left out for whatever random God to ignore? What kind of ghost drinks strawberry Fanta anyway? If I were a ghoul I'd want the hard stuff. I'd terrorise the locals until they gave me some damn Meh Kong or Hong Thong or whatever. Come to think of it, I do that already.
Because my wife lived in Germany for 12 years, ... It took her over a year to get comfortable living ... here, and it's her culture.
See! Thai do have the capacity to recognise how illogical they're being and correct themselves. If one can do it, they all can. Whenever I go back to Australia after spending time in a foreign culture, I bemoan a lot of retarded things about my country too. Still, Thailand has way more retarded things to fix than we do, in my hum- okay, in my biased opinion. I guess since most Thai are too poor to travel outside the Kingdom, they don't get the opportunity to develop a fresh perspective. Once again, poverty is the culprit. Maybe I should buy a few more temporary tattoos off em?
PS Madmac - 2 baht off smoky bandits at the Rawai Beach 7/11 this morning. Who could resist? Dunno if that deal applies wherever you are.

Madmac....I just kind of smile and let her go with it now. The wife really doesn't speak english well enough to explain it very well anyway.
Cranky.....They are extremly superstitious and they will vary from region to region. Even village to village. We can't sleep with our head under a west window because people "wake up dead". I thought about doing it anyway to show her but then I figured it would be my luck to have a heart attack in the middle of the night and it would only reinforce it. As for their travels, there are a lot of people that probably can't remember the last time they left the village. Can't afford it and just don't have a desire to.

hey, to be fair to cranky, it took me several months to get used to Thai food when i first visited too. i worked into it slowly with fried rice and but mee noodle dishes and stuff like that. now i really enjoy it. but i enjoy western food too, and Indian, and etc. etc.
i think places like Phuket and Bangkok and Chiang Mai are so awesome because of the amazing variety of food available, from Thai and other asian stuff right across the european continent and then some. there is some amazing stuff to be enjoyed. we had fantastic Mexican, Indian, and Israeli food on our last trip to Chiang Mai, and Turkish, Greek, and Italian the time before that. my favorite spots in BKK used to be an Indonesian place and a Swiss restaurant.
but if you are a poor backpacker....
i'd still vote for the less expensive Thai food over the smoky bites, at least most of the time, just because of the opportunity cost. but hey, nobody asked me either. cheers.

.What's the Thai word for "paranoid"? 50 Baht says they don't have one.
@scythemk - .I hate to say it, but you're kind of right. I ended up renting for 2 weeks at Rawai, yet I don't particularly like seafood (except safe stuff like fish n chips) and I love swimming at the beach - Rawai Beach is shite. In retrospect I'd be way better off renting a guest house at Kata or Karon. If I can find somewhere for 4500-5k a month, I just might. For the past 6 weeks I've mostly survived on 10 baht sandwiches and smoky bites from 7/11. Cheap! When I do splash out, it's usually on burgers and pizzas. Someone here, Madmac I think, said he doesn't like the beach. He probably loves the seafood. I'm the other way around. I will have you know I've eaten at the roadside diners a lot - what do you call those anyway? I had an awesome bit of rice and pork last night for 35. Presentation was good too. Portion left me wanting a bit more, but besides that it was one of the best meals I've had here. And they even helped me open my Meh Kong bottle. The lid often can't be unscrewed properly, but for 99 baht, who's complaining? I will try to eat some seafood before I leave Rawai. It's just such a pain in the arse with all the claws and shells. Food shouldn't look that scary either. I will not eat a squid. Oh, and I can't take spice. I also believe food should not cause you pain. I'm not into masochistic mastication. I do like wordplay though.
@exacto - Smoky bites cost 18-20 baht with bun and dressing. The average roadside dining affair runs at 30-50 baht. I can fill my belly for a good 2-3 hours on a smoky bite and a sandwich, costing 10 baht. Plus it's faster to do that when you're on the go than sit down, adjust the chairs and table for my gargantuan leg span, go through the whole awkward smile thing with the locals, etc etc.
PS No one knows about my orange juice in the can thing? (q1) Gaddarnit.

Hi Cranky,
So you don't like Rawai beach. Have you been to Nai Harn beach? That is a very nice beach, just 10 motorbike minutes from Rawai, don't know what the sea is like now.
The OJ question: Concentrate OJ means that it was made from orange juice concentrate in at the manufactor. So they get the juice from the oranges, than take out the water. They than ship it to the factory where they add water again and bottle it.
I think the taste is different than the fresh juice but other than that there is no reason not to buy it.
Greetings Tino

Paranoid....wi dtok gang won.....That's one big bottle of Leo beer, thank you.
I think the concentrate will have some pulp in it also. So if you see little pieces floating around in it, don't worry. For some reason they don't put the pull tops on the cans in the states either. You got me there as to why.

Hey Cranky,
So it's 30 to 50 baht for a roadside bowl of noodles in Phukhet is it? Sorry about that. I was paying in the 25 to 30 baht range for large servings of noodles, fried rice, and other good stuff in places like Khamphaeng Phet, Sukhothai, and all of the northeast during my trip to Thailand last January. The 25 baht size was the normal stuff, and the 30 baht was the special, which was usually larger and included extra meat or a fried egg on top or something like that.
Hey, since I have your attention, how much is a standard one hour Thai massage in the area where you are staying? What is a large bottle of Chang going for at an outdoor beer bar? And how is that dodgy room rental working out? All good I hope. Regards.

@Tinoh - "So you don't like Rawai beach. Have you been to Nai Harn beach?"
.Hell yeah I've been to Nai Harn. It is the beach that redeems all of Rawai in my opinion. Absolutely amazing beach. You've got the waves, you've got the chilled atmosphere and little restaurants if you want, and you've got those big warm pools where the ocean has poked it's way inland. I could loll about in those for hours and have. .The stream will even cart you slowly back to the main event if you lie back, with the occasional school of fish popping by for entertainment. Awesome stuff. Love it.
There's a few cool bars around the area too, same same for restaurants and cafes. I didn't mean to come down on it so hard before. I've just been spoiled, clearly.

@exacto - hey mate, happy to answer a few questions, to the best of my knowledge...
30-50 is the going rate for a feed, yes. Burgers are 120 up and pizza is 150-200 or more. I love my pizza hawaii.
A small beer costs 50 pretty much every place - I think a large is 75 or so, but I can't confirm that...yet.
A Thai massage is 300 in most of Patong, but tell them you'll "think about it" and start walking and the price'll drop to 200 pretty quickly. Some out of the way places have 200 as a starting price, but I haven't been for a massage in ages since the novelty wore off. You could probably twist arms and get it for as low as 150 at the moment. They have NOTHING to do all day except shout "Weeelllcooooooome!" and shriek if you honk at them.
I've just about got Phuket figured out as far as minimising living costs and maximising fun. I really should see some more of Thailand soon, but my visa's up Oct 9. Sucks because I'd really love to check out the Vegan festival that has nothing to do with vegetables and a whole lot to do with shotguns and knives through the face.

@Exacto again - The dodgey room rental is working out okay. I've got something of a lizard problem, but I'm hoping they'll just eat the roaches and be on their way. Aside from having to go next door to my landlord's apartment to use the net and hope he's not having one of his mid afternoon siestas, it's awesome.
He cracked the s--ts with me a bit last night when he found out I drove his embarrassing, tartan-seated Suzuki step from Rawai to Kamala, "You rent from me one hundred baht, you drive very long distance to kamala? Is not so good ah?" but I just changed the subject to beer and he calmed down. What business is it of his where I drive the bike, as long as I stay in Phuket right? I should have just told him I got burned at Nai Harn. White lies really make life a lot easier around here.
