Child porn for sale on Bangkok streets

Posted by somtam2000 on 4/10/2010 at 07:12 admin

While it's nothing new to see pornographic VCDs and DVDs being sold on Bangkok's streets, I was pretty disgusted to read in the Bangkok Post that vendors are also selling child porn -- with covers advertising that the kids are as young as 7 -- on Sukhumvit Road.

Absolutely Outrageous.

A police office interviewed in the story, blames it on the usual "influential people". It would be fab to see the Bangkok Post actually name the particular person responsible for making sure that child pornography is sold openly on Sukhumvit Road (or anywhere for that matter).

You can read the full story here

Really lost for words.

I read that yesterday also Somtam. It was hard to believe that it was done so openly but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. It would be nice for once for the Post to dig a little deeper as they always say that it is someone in power that makes it all possible but that is as far as they go in all their articles.

THis is commonplace throughout Thailand.

THe problem is that piracy of DVDs etc is not just restricted to the streets.
The major retail outlets virtually ALL offer computers with pirate OS - that means this is done with the connivance of those business people at the very top of Thailand's elite.

This then inhibits the police's ability to raid and /or enforce.

In this climate of "laissez-faire" it is hardly surprising then that those wishing to deal in Child pornography and the like can do so with impunity.

Don't blame tourists or even the vendors - it is the few who run this country that are really to blame

Wilko is of course right here. It is the negative impact of laissez-faire systems. Now having lived here over three years, in a part of Thailand where that freedom is strongly felt, I love the libertarian atmosphere of the place. BUT, it does have it's drawbacks, and this is one of them.

Perhaps because the writer doesn't want to have his brains blown out - which is a common outcome here if you cause a powerful man to lose face OR if you threaten them financially or both. Here in small town Mukdahan that very thing happened the year before I arrived the first time.

While I haven't spent too much time perusing in detail the porn stands along Sukhumvit Rd, as I recall there's a lot of pretty standard porn on display -- ie involving adults -- which I personally don't have a particular issue with. However, I certainly don't recall seeing DVDs that were explicitly displaying/promoting child porn on display.

I'm not debating the existence of child porn DVDs in Thailand, but I'm very surprised that this material is being openly/prominently sold on the sidewalk, and nothing is being done about it.

Agree with MM re reasons for why these people don't get named.

Yeah, I agree Madmac. In yesterdays Post online, I couldn't find a comment from anyone about it except in the letters column. Agree with you to Wilko.

Here is a very good follow-up piece to the original in the Bangkok -- asking many of the questions the BP didn't bother to. Well worth a read.

Well, that's reassuring. Oh well, Thailand is what it is - it's not going to modify itself to suit us.
