When you land tired and disorientated at the new BKK airport, you go outside and the "Limo" taxis descend on you to charge you 900 baht into central Bangkok. We paid that the first time but after coming back from an internal flight we found that if you want a standard yellow and green taxi on a meter, you have to go left (I think) towards departures and down a floor to find them. You pay at a desk a 50 baht "booking fee" and then you are shown to a taxi where it will cost you a lot less i.e. it cost us another 250 baht (total 300 baht) to get to Petchburi Rd, not 900.
Maybe things will change when the skytrain opens but at the moment it's made a bit difficult for you to do it your own way. Having said that, it's still cheaper than that kind of distance in the UK!

The cab stands are one floor below the arrival hall. This is the place that you wait in line and get a cab and you have to pay the additional 50 baht airport tax. The total to get in town would only be 300-350 tops inclusive of toll ways.

there is a website where you can order your taxi before you come to thailand!
The site is in german, but the service is also in english! the price for the service (namecard for the airport, telefon) is 300,-baht taxiprice by taximeter, drivers speak thai, english and german! I don't konw if the board rules allow websites here, so just ask me for the link
