Hey, I'm getting into bangkok early jan 1st. Can anyone recommend a decent cheap hostel to stay at? How long does the average backpacker stay in Bangkok when they first arrive?
Any suggestions on things to get while I'm there?
Thanks in advance

This story is a bit dated, but would be a good starting point. http://www.travelfish.org/feature/137

How much do you want to spend on a hostel? Some small hotels are pretty cheap compared to Europe or US. The price you have in mind for a hostel may be around the same price as a cheap hotel with air, etc.
What time are you arriving on January first, what does "early" mean? Just after midnight or around 7 a.m.?
January 1 is a holiday, some of the highest bookings of the year are for that day, the night before and Christmas. Get several suggestions for places to stay at so you have some definite possibilities to check out. You may be able to call some hotels and ask about vacancies but a reservation might be the best thing to have for this time of year.
