Can you get to Chiang Rai directly from Soppong? Or do you have to go back to Chiang Mai?

By public bus, the quickest way is back via Chiang Rai. If you have time though, a better way is to backtrack a bit then north via Fang to Tha Ton and then get the boat from there to Chiang Rai. It is a bit touristy -- but fun.
