Bangkok Air owns this route so flights are expensive.
You could get a bus/train to Hat Yai, then catch a cheap flight to Singapore with Tiger Airways. If you don't mind spending a lot of time, you could take the train all the way down, getting off in a couple places to sight-see a bit,

Unfortunately there are no cheap flights on that route. By bus or train will take a couple days each way. For trains read the Seat61 details.

Train from Suruthani it is then, no so keen on the buses, more to see on the trains i think!
no rush so might stop and chill on the way down!
only have take a small bag so shouldnt be to bad can leave stuff in Koh Samui
Bangkok Airways must be pretty rich with the price of flights from Koh Samui!

If you have the time, get off in Butterworth, Malaysia, and head over to Penang for a day. Kuala Lumpur is also worth a day or 2 of your time.
